The city as we know it today was born, in essence, when Benjamin Wilson became the first Anglo settler in the region in 1841. Wilson would later become the mayor of Los Angeles and a California senator. But is Wilson was the seed, Dr. Daniel M. Berry as the water that would grow this City of Roses.

Dr. Daniel M. Berry had come to from Indiana searching for a miracle. An asthmatic, Berry had been looking for a suitable place to relocate his loyal group of similarly asthmatic patients. He would characterize his sojourn to the area by say, It was the best three nights of sleep in my life. Eager to keep the area a secret, he created the Southern California Orange Grove Association and began to sell shares for a massive 4,000 aces bid. In 1874, the Indiana Colony was born. Pasadena would soon follow.

The colonys reputation for warm weather slowly drew settlers from the East and in the years prior to the Great Depression, Pasadena had become something of a fashionable winter resort for cold-weary Midwestern and Eastern families. This migration brought with it artists, actors, and scientists. The citys cultural wherewithal began to multiply. In 1917, the famous Pasadena Playhouse opened its doors. ISO 9001 Quality Manual

A quality manual is the top-level definition of a quality management system of your company. It is similar to an expanded mission or vision statement. Quality manual establishes the policy level position of your management in the area of quality management system (QMS). There are two definitions of what a quality manual for an ISO 9001 QMS should be:

ISO 10013, Guidelines for Developing Quality Manuals, element 4.2, gives detailed suggestions for creating a quality manual. It defines a quality manual, among other requirements, as a document that should "consist of, or refer to, the documented quality system procedures intended for planning and administration of activities which impact on quality" ISO 9001:2000, element 4.2.2 describes a quality manual as a document containing:

- the scope of the QMS and details of and justification for any exclusions;

- quality managemet system procedures or reference to them;

- a specified interaction between the processes of your QMS.

If we follow the requirement 4.2.2.a of ISO 9001:2000 Standard, we simply need our quality manual to clearly define the scope of our QMS, exclusions, if any; reference our procedures and define interactions between the processes.

Definition of the scope is usually placed into the ?Scope? section of the manual. It simply states what activities your company performs. For example: ?My Company, Inc. designs, manufactures and distributes card board boxes for high volume customers? or ?My Company, Inc. provides ISO 9001 consulting and training services for service companies?

Now, after we established the scope of our ISO 9001:2000 QMS, we need to describe the processes we use to achieve the results stated in our scope. While we are doing this, we need to remember to reference corresponding procedures. Per my experience, the easiest way to do it, is to transform the standard from a list of requirements into your organization's dedication to satisfy those requirements. For example: Element 4.2.4 of ISO 9001:2000 requires that "Records shall be established and maintained to provide evidence of conformity to requirements and the effective operation of the quality management system" our manual will affirm: "XYZ Corporation ensures that records are established and maintained to provide evidence of conformity to requirements and the effective operation of the QMS per the Records Procedure"

Looking at the paragraph above, you will notice that a reference to a specific procedure satisfies the second requirement for a quality manual. Continuing in a similar way, addressing all applicable elements of the standard and referencing corresponding procedures, we will develop a quality manual satisfying ISO 9001:2000 requirements.

Dirty Dancing Tickets" Is Good Clean Fun!

Take a slightly deceptive title and a couple of unknown actors, add an unknown choreographer, and you have the "sleeper" of Hollywood's dreams! Dirty Dancing, with its unassuming budget and very little hoopla, has now done over $300 million at the box office. It has enthralled moviegoers in Europe and Australia as well as the U.S.A. Home video sales of over a million set a record for that industry. The soundtrack has spawned two multi-platinum albums and an astonishing number of singles sales.

The secret seems to be a combination of qualities. Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey are a scintillating couple when they get going, and they certainly do! The scene is set in 1963, when the world (at least the United States) still held on to something like innocence. Jennifer Grey is well cast as Frances Houseman, a not-quite-typical Jewish Princess who is known as "Baby" and doesn't see a thing wrong with it. Patrick Swayze dazzles with his portrayal of the sexy but determinedly sullen Johnny Castle.

The Housemans are V.I.P. guests at Kellerman's Resort in the Catskills, on a three-week family vacation. Dr. Houseman, the personal physician of the resort's owner, his wife (not quite as staid as she first appears), 17 year old Baby and Lisa, her older and trying- to-be-superior sister all have some living and learning to do. Baby sets the stage by accidentally getting involved with the "No Guests Please" resort staff.

Johnny Castle is very much a ladies' man, but until he meets Baby, he has only been using and being used by women. When his dance partner gets a botched abortion, unknowingly financed by Dr. Houseman at Baby's insistence, and she has to call her father to save the dancer's life, the doctor assumes that Johnny is the guilty party and forbids his daughter to have anything further to do with "those people".

Baby has done what she believes is the right thing, but it causes a painful rift between her Dad and her growing understanding of herself. She finds herself offering to stand in for Penny, mostly so Johnny won't lose his "gig". With some really intense lessons from the pro, they develop a pretty stunning routine of their own. Yes, Baby falls in love.

While all this is happening, Baby's older sister is getting ready to "go all the way" with Robbie, son of the resort owner, though we have learned that Robbie is the guilty cause of the dancer's abortion, but feels no guilt. When another woman who has carnal designs on Johnny spies him embracing Baby, spite leads her to accuse Johnny of the theft of a patron's wallet. Johnny is assumed to be the culprit until Baby tells her father and the irate resort owner that Johnny couldn't have done it because he was in his room all night - with her!

Everybody grows up in this film, in one way or another. It's a triumph of love, with Johnny coming back to the resort for his traditional "last dance" of the season, even though he has been fired. When he pulls Baby out onto the stage - from her family's table, and in front of the whole Kellerman assembly, the "dirty dancing" they perform is truly a dazzling sight to behold, and indeed the entire audience is on its feet and dancing in the aisles.

As it becomes clear that the movie's title involves a few different but cohesive elements, the experience becomes even more enjoyable. The plot is simple, but the action is believable and in the case of the dance scenes, beautifully choreographed by (also then unknown) Kenny Ortega. "Dirty" is the farthest thing from the feeling you will get from this sensual but never sleazy display of youthful energy and abandon.

If you missed this performance in the movie theatres, there may still be a chance to see the Broadway production, which translates very well. It has played to great applause in Germany, England, Canada and Australia, and as of this date is still playing in London. The touring production will be in Boston until March 15th, 2009. Everyone will run into at least one person, maybe more, who will tell them that they shouldn't homeschool. The decision to homeschool often isn't popular, and isn't an easy one to make. Dealing with homeschooling nay-sayers will have to be dealt with ahead of time, and the choice in how your child is educated is entirely up to you.

One of the quintessential arguments of a homeschooling nay-sayer is that you're not qualified to teach your own child, regardless if you have a Bachelor of Arts in Education or not. To this argument, I say poppy-cock! If you're a parent, you've already been teaching your child since birth. Who was it that taught your child to talk, walk, and use the restroom by themselves? It was you and your spouse, of course. So, if you could teach them those skills, why wouldn't you be qualified to teach them how to read or do math?

It is said by nay-sayers that teaching a child is too difficult and that we are unqualified to do it. What is found to be more difficult is the thought of having to teach 18-20 young children several subjects all in one day. It is a difficult job; teaching one child to read is not. It can be done!

Another argument you might hear if you're trying to decide if you want to homeschool is that the children need socialization. Well, I don't know about you, but I'm not sure I want my children to learn all of the things they learn at school. Of course, all of the lessons aren't given by the teachers. Many are learned as the result of being with other children.

To this argument, I say that homeschooled children are better socialized than 95% of the children in public schools. Besides being able to deal with their peers, homeschooled children can carry on intelligent conversations with people of all ages. Public schools create artificial societies and these societies are not true to life. Besides public education, there isn't a time at any other point in your life that you're going to deal with people all your age. It just doesn't happen, and it won't happen, either.

During the research process of homeschooling your child, there are a few comments that you will be likely to hear. It is okay if you do not know everything you're told you need to know. As you are along side your child, that that as an opportunity to learn. Not every hero flies through the air in a special suit. Some wear a uniform. As I was doing research the other day, I came across the story of just such a hero--one General Maxwell W. Steel, Jr. Retired since 1975, General Steel left behind a legacy, a lifetime of both civilian and military service. His story says it all.

His military career begins in 1944. General Steel joined the Medical Officer Training Corps. while working on his MD. When he finished his medical degree, he then received a Reserve Commission as First Lieutenant. The full-time, active military service that I spoke of began in November of that year. He was assigned to an Orthopedic Doctor at the Oliver General Hospital, located in Augusta, GA. Three months later, as the military often does, General Steel was re-assigned to Neurosurgical Service in Walla-Walla, Washington (at McCaw General).

After World War II, General Steel briefly left the military and continued his medical career as a civilian. Returning to civilian life brought him to Memorial Hospital where he was appointed chief hospital resident. However, that hiatus would only be temporary. He completed his training in internal medicine at Walter Reed and received a regular commission in the Army. However, this residency would end in 1949 when he would be transferred to the Air Force.

As you can see, this is an amazing man who is always ready to serve. After being transferred to the Air Force he would be assigned to Chanute Air Force Base in November of 1950. There at Chanute he would serve as Chief Medical Officer. Not long after that, from June 1951 to December 1953, he would serve as a consultant in internal medicine to the Far East Air Force's Surgeon. Afterwards, in 1954, he would be transferred to March Air Force Base in California where he would be Chief of Medical and Professional Services.

General Steel would go on to serve at Bolling Green and Andrews. From 1955 to 1958 he would serve as Chief of Medical Services and Director of Professional Services at Bolling AFB and which point he would be transferred to be Commander of the Malcolm Grow United States Air Force Medical Center, as well as Surgeon of Headquarters Command. About a year later he became Command Surgeon, Military Airlift Command. Two short years later, in September of 1972, he became deputy surgeon general of the Air Force. However, in September of 1975 he would retire from all military service. While General Steel may not be a household name, the numerous lives that he served (and, quite literally, saved) are forever in his debt. - 16492
