Garment Steamers Need Love To

By Martha Serensford

To keep your garment steamer happy, it is recommended that you follow the procedures that are about to be mentioned to maintain your garment steamers maximum performance.

Maintenance should be performed on your garment steamer roughly every 3-6 months depending on your water supply. In most instances, a steamer that is severely clogged will require it to be disassembled to properly clean and prolong the life span of the unit.

An authorized repair center or a steamer service technician best performs this disassembling process.

1. Remove the hose from the garment steamer. Pour out any water that might be left in your unit.

2. The hose could be blocked by sediment build up--in this case use a water hose. This should loosen any buildup inside the hose.

3. To clean the internal parts of your steamer, use of the garment steamer cleaner (10 ounce bottle is recommended). The cleaner is acid-based and will remove hard water deposits and sediment build-up.

4. Fill the unit with 1 gallon of water and add at least 10 ounces of your acid based cleaner. Turn the steamer on to preheat so that the water solution has to warm.

5. When the preheat cycle is complete, turn the switch off and unplug the steamer from the power outlet. Let the water and cleaning solution remain i the steamer for a period of two to three hours. Be sure not to steam the solution in the steamer as damage is certain to occur.

6. Remove the cleaning solution from the unit. do this by simply tipping the steamer over and pouring the solution out where the hose fits.

7. Rinse the unit thoroughly by flushing with fresh water two to three times.

8. If discolored water is still present from the steamer, it may require this process being repeated.

9. Contact a garment steamer specialist for further questions. - 16492
