Thinking of holidays to Cuba? Well, out of all the Caribbean Islands, Cuba is definitely one with more to offer than just a beach holiday. The people are bright, self-assertive and handsome. Their cultural heritage is colourful, as are the monuments of their often tumultuous, always fascinating history. A holiday to Cuba is something you should really consider in your agenda.
These are just some of the facts to consider and places and things you should not miss in your holidays to Cuba.
Fishing: The Gulf Stream creates conditions for deep-sea fishing at its best on the northwest coast Havana, Varadero, Cayo Guillermo and Guardalavaca's Bahia de Naranjo for barracuda, sailfish, shark, swordfish, tuna and mackerel. For freshwater lake fishing for bass, perch and trout, try Pinar del Rio's Laguna Grande and Moron's Laguna La Redonda (easy access by causeway from Cayo Coco).
Golf: You will find an 18-hole course at Varadero's Las Americas club and nine holes at the Havana Golf Club. More are planned.
Music: In 1997, Buena Vista Social Club exploded on the international scene with records and the documentary film of Wim Wonders. In their 70s and 80s, singers Cam pay Segundo and Ibrahim Ferrer and pianist Ruben Gonzalez suddenly became world stars. They reintroduced Europeans and Americans to the magic of Afro-Cuban music.
Calle Obispo: One of the most colourful streets in La Habana Vieja, it boasts at No. 117 the town's oldest remaining house (1648), a single-storey building repainted bright blue and white with fine tiled roof the same side, the Hotel Ambos Mundos at the corner of Mercaderes, has preserved Ernest Hemingway's room as a small museum, with his bed, one of his old Royal typewriters and other memorabilia, including a facsimile of his manuscript of For Whom the Bell Tolls. There is a splendid view of the old town from the hotel's rooftop bar. Across the street is the popular Caf Paris.
