Top Luxury Lodge in Tanzania - Mnemba Island Lodge

By Kark Heinz

Mnemba Lodge is located on an island off the coast of Zanzibar. This is an exquisite serene getaway that allows guests to quietly savor Mother Nature's delight. As a testimony of its stunning allure, Conde Nast Traveller nominated Mnemba Island as one of the most romantic ocean destinations in the world.

Mnemba is an Arabic term that means an octopus head. This island is found two kilometers north east of Zanzibar which is a 20 minute journey in a traditional 16 foot boat. A pure enveloping circumference of beach envelopes the island. To ensure that the magnificent coral reefs and unique sea life is preserved, a protection zone has been established around the island.

The only inhabitants of the island are lodge staff and guests, offering luxurious privacy and guaranteed exclusivity unparalleled on the African coastline. Mnemba Island features just ten en suite banda cottages, bordered on three sides by tropical beach forest and overlooking the beach and coral reef.

Each exquisite banda has been hand-woven and thatched from tree branches and traditional Zanzibari palm-matting. The food here is great; the chef prepares mouthwatering cuisine with exotic delicacies.

The fact that Mneba has a beautiful diving site makes it a much sought after tourist attraction site. It's important to note that valid diving certification is needed. A professional diving school is situated on the island for you at an extra cost. The alluring waters of the Indian Ocean fall within a 200 meter protected zone providing a much needed haven for a host of marine life.

The protected zone falls under the control of the Conservation Corporation Africa giving it exclusive trans versing rights over the area. The lagoon is synonymous with a huge fish tank filled with colorful marine life. There are more than 300 species of fish that have been identified. The lagoon hosts the striped dolphin, the gigantic, whale shark which despite its massive size is quite harmless. There is also a variety of game fish like the marlin barracuda which are tagged before being released back to the lagoon.

There are lots of fun filled water activities like scuba diving, kayaking, fly-fishing, swimming, wind surfing, snorkeling. The island is home not only to aquatic life but to birds as well hence proving a chance to have breathtaking view birds. You could also choose to take a walk around the island or simply laze in the sun and improve your sun tan.

Guests may also engage in deep-sea fishing, or tour of the ancient ?Spice Island? of Zanzibar, and a range of relaxing massages and therapeutic treatments. There is some mobile phone reception on the island, and a broadband WiFi signal is usually available for internet access. Mnemba is accessible via a flight to Dar es Salaam, about 5km off Zanzibar?s east coast. - 16492
