Things To Consider When Buying Portable Generators

By Renick Hedrick

When you are trying to find some reliable portable generators there are some challenges ahead. Not because there are no reliable generators available, but because there are so many different units to choose from. And to make everything even trickier, everybody seems to have their own notion on which type of generator is most reliable.

There is a lot of people that will say that one particular brand has the best portable generator. While that might be true, it is completely subjective when asking around to find out what brands are most reliable. For an important purchase like this, you simply need to be thorough and cautious. After awhile, you will begin to see some of the models that you prefer rise to the top of your list.

Another good indicator is to read customers reviews on the internet. Just keep in mind that there should be a pretty large sample from which to read. Even the very best products have someone who does not like them. The same goes for portable generators. So it is pretty much a numbers game when you start your assessment.

While assessing the opinions of other regarding portable generators may be tough, there is one thing you have to be sure of. And that is safety. You should never overlook the safety features of any of these units. Generally speaking, portable generators possess three common hazards. Those are carbon monoxide fumes, shock, and fire.

Internal combustion engines give off carbon dioxide as a byproduct of gas consumption. This gas is completely odorless and colorless, so you would not even know that you are breathing these fumes. This is why generators should never be running indoors, or in a confined space. If you ever begin to feel light-headed, dizzy or nauseous while your generator is in operation, go to fresh air right away. You should install a CO alarm to detect the presence of deadly carbon monoxide levels, and change the battery often, maybe every time you adjust your clocks for daylight savings time.

To prevent against shock, ensure that your generator stays dry. Do not touch with wet hands or when you are standing in a water puddle. Ensure that your unit is properly grounded. Do not overload the generator and make sure that if you are using extension cords, they are rated for the load they will be supporting. Never plug your generator into you're the wall outlets of your house. Doing so will create backfeed in the electric lines, possibly causing electrocution of unsuspecting utility workers who are trying to place your home back in service.

Finally, since you are operating a motor fueled with a flammable liquid, you have to take care in avoiding fires. Stow the gasoline at a safe distance away from the generator in properly labeled non-glass containers. Gas vapors can always run along the floor and be ignited from the heat of the generator. You must always turn off the generator and allow it to cool before ever refilling the gas tank to protect against spilled gas ignition. Do not ever smoke or allow any open flames anywhere near your generator.

So whenever it boils down to finding out what portable generator is the most reliable, the answer can be difficult to find. Your best shot might be to try out what everybody else is using, and hope that it will work out for you too. But the thing you should never ever be subjective about, and that is be able to operate the unit safely. - 16492
