Before You Buy a Couch: 6 Things You Should Know

By Steven M. Fisher

1: COLOR IS IMPORTANT.

The first thing you will respond to is the color, so look for a color that works with the colors you already have in your room or that express your style.

2: COMFORT IS KING.

Once you find the couch you like, test it for comfort. Bounce up and down on the cushions. Make sure you like the feel. After all, you are the one that will be sitting on it.

3: DURABILITY.

Wiggle the arms. Do they hold firm, indicating good workmanship? Lift the frame. Does it feel heavy and sturdy?

4: GET THE FEEL.

Do you like the feel of the fabric? Are the seams straight and does the fabric line up properly? Most importantly, do you like the way it feels when you sit and relax on it?

5: THE PRICE.

Double check the price against other couches you have looked at. Good quality can be found in all price ranges.

6: MAKE SURE IT FITS.

You don't want the sofa to overwhelm your room, but you also don't want it to be dwarfed by other pieces. - 16492
