The Tough Rules You Need to Follow As You Advance Your Career

By Adam Jones

If you have a job in a fair-sized office and you get promoted, here is how to handle your new caste problems gracefully.

In the beginning, you can still accept personal invitations but only reciprocate with group invites; later find ways not to have any social relations with them.

For instance, find ways of avoiding the old group at lunch time. Let them understand you cannot be one of them any longer.

If you have a family, then you may give your wife more leeway in disengaging from the old circle of peers. After all, she is not as savvy as you are regarding the corporate rules.

Break away gradually, but eventually reduce all contacts to office hours. Recognize the simple fact of office life that the higher you go, the fewer friends you'll have in the company.

Of course, you may have known that an office caste system exists in American businesses, but did you realize the full force of this hidden management tool?

One may ask what this code of behaviour is good for. And here is an answer: Take the story of the two office clerks who were doing a lousy job. They happened to be great friends with the manager of that department.

These hapless employees caused the company to lose business worth $40,000. When their manager was told to get rid of them, he didn't take action. As a result, both he and the two clerks were fired. This manager failed to understand the demands of his position. - 16492
