Strategic Thinking Tactics - Ready To Be A Clever Supervisor

By Mr Martin Haworth

Strategic thinking is an approach or a perspective that any top manager needs to consider while thinking on their business into the future. It is an indispensable way to understand ways to convert future aspirations and goals into value.

To make a business progress according to a manager or owner's wishes, there needs to be a conscious effort to build a skillset that includes facilitation, negotiation, creativity, team-building and the ability to work through perceived problems with positivity and good humor.

To use strategic thinking activities, enormously helps to clarify the likelihood of progress rather than failure and highlight possible hurdles that will need to be overcome, often in good time.

Strategic Thinking - An Overview

Where strategic thinking is used best, the opportunities for it's application is widest. As soon as the need for a strategic view is identified, the possibilities are almost unlimited. You see, in almost every organization there is a use in identifying the requirements for the future. Getting a head around the possibilities then are pretty obvious.

The use of a strategic thinking methods allows reverse engineering of the future, so that tactics are delivered appropriately, rather than landing there by luck.

This provides the much needed and often quoted 'larger picture' and creates a feeling of direction and growth along with a sense of progress. So if any organization makes decisions without adopting a comprehensive strategic thinking procedure, it risks being hasty and uninformed in its decisions and deprives itself of the creativity and insight which strategic thinking can provide.

The Purpose of Strategic Thinking

The key point about strategic thinking is that it provides a solid and researched framework to guide towards planned outcomes that may be some way into the distance. Some of the major organizations in the world have strategic plans or some 50 years in advance. Now, that requires some thinking ahead!

It's also a sufficient and clear guideline for the continued development and growth of the organization. One of the most important purposes of strategic thinking, is out-thinking your competitors and keeping ahead of your rivals.

While engaged in any strategic thinking process, a business team usually has to try to consider as many consequences and eventualities that may arise from their own actions aimed at improvement or growth. By minimizing adverse outcomes that could destroy ambitious plans.

This kind of work can, of course, be like speculating on the future, with little clarity about exactly what conditions will be in place - yet it is a vital component of the work.

Strategic Thinking As Work In Progress

Most managers find solving daily problems the easiest way forward. the use knee-jerk responses to stroke their ego, showing that they are capable. To be honest, it is a quick road to breakdown. A spell of occasional contemplation to deliver the long term goals of the organization, it is amazing how often that helps a lot by developing employees and the business also.

Yet if there is the aspiration to improve and grow with operational performance, it is imperative to adopt the benefits of strategic thinking. By simply asking what is required as outcomes from actions, and what might realistically will follow from them in terms of unforeseen consequences and then the potential outcomes of that, a tighter fit may well be accomplished, bringing the thinking closer to reality.

This sort of measuring up actions in the day job in the light of where you are going over the years ahead, encourages a healthier future. This protects what you are your people aspire to achieve - a great way forward to a successful and sustainable future, which will benefit everyone. Where strategic thinking is in place, there is every hope that your successes now will continue on till the sun sets!

Strategic Thinking, In The End It's Your Future...

Most usefully, strategic thinking can be a versatile valuable aid to versatile management and provides a 'bigger picture' that simplifies the most complex of business organizational activities processes, as well as creating the environment to encourage the sharing of possibilities for the future.

Strategic thinking is not, per se, the fix, more, it is an ability to at least look into the future, even though it is not possible to see how it will end up precisely.
