By Tess Kirkpatrick

From the sights and sounds of the Big Apple to the country comforts of Eastern Pennsylvania to the seascapes of the Maryland coast, the Mid-Atlantic region is sure to entice even the pickiest traveler.

There is, in fact, so much to do in this region rich in history and culture that planning a trip can be a challenge. Perhaps the best plan of attack is to make a list of your top attractions and prepare an itinerary that fits in as many as possible. You could spend your days exploring Washington, D.C., and Virginia or explore upstate New York and its beautiful scenery.

If you aren't sure which routes to take, let seasoned travel writer Karen Brown do all the work. On her popular website, Brown outlines several interesting itineraries, complete with driving directions and plenty of things do see and do along the way. Her readers have also voted and chosen the following lodgings as the best in the Mid-Atlantic region:

The innkeepers at the Antrim 1844 Country House Hotel have set the stage for your next romantic getaway. Located in Taneytown, Maryland, the former plantation home has been meticulously restored to reflect all its former glory. The romantic guest chambers in the main house are filled with fine furnishings and the beds are topped with soft, feather comforters. Most of the rooms have a fireplace and some have a clawfoot or Jacuzzi tub. There also are more than two dozen other accommodations spread among the 24 acres, located in unique outbuildings, all of which boast romantic period dcor and a fireplace. This historic Maryland inn was chosen as the "Most Romantic" lodging in the Mid-Atlantic region by Karen Brown readers.

The Inn at Turkey Hill offers travelers a little bit of everything, including economical accommodations with plenty of extras. The centerpiece of this inn is the historic main house, built in 1839, which houses a tavern, gourmet restaurant and two bed and breakfast rooms. More than a dozen rooms and suites are located in a newer addition which surrounds the inn's courtyard. Deluxe rooms with double whirlpool tubs are located in The Stable. Guest rooms are stocked with amenities such as fluffy robes and luxury bath products. Karen Brown readers have chosen this Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania, inn as the Mid-Atlantic's "Greatest Value."

Few places can boast as much historic significance as the Inn at Warner Hill. The historic plantation home was part of a spread that was founded by George Washington's great-great-grandfather, and the inn is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Add to that its proximity to historic venues such as Jamestown and the location of the Battle of Yorktown, and you'll find plenty to do and see. In addition to attracting history buffs, the meticulously restored home is a true romantic retreat. The guest rooms, decorated in period style with antiques, include amenities such as fireplaces and spa tubs. Dinner at the inn is gourmet treat and a perfect place to celebrate an anniversary or special occasion. This Gloucester, Virginia, inn was chosen as the Mid-Atlantic's "Warmest Welcome," by Karen Brown readers.

Some lodgings are special because of their hospitality, some for their dcor, others for the location. At Hotel Plaza Athenee any and all of these special features apply. Named by Karen Brown readers as the Mid-Atlantic's top "Splendid Splurge," this posh boutique hotel is located one block from Central Park in the Upper East Side of Manhattan. City and park views, posh European dcor and fine furnishings grace the rooms and suites. The hotel's restaurant, Arabelle, is a little bit of Paris in New York City, serving a mix of American and French cuisine in a romantic setting. - 16492
