A Spray Tan Backgrounder

By Kelly Sampson

Tanning booths have become the number one way for people to keep that year round tanned look. We should all now be aware of the dangers of too much sun (skin cancer) and a number of alternatives are showing success in the market to counteract these health issues.

One of the choices people are now making is to go to a salon that offers spray tanning for an almost instant, safe tan. Originally it was the creams and bronzing lotions that were the most commonly used but spraying the tan on gives a more professional finish.

There are now home spray tanning systems available but these may not be the easiest to use on your own although regular users could save money and time. While there are different ways to provide an alternative tan, the way to achieve it and make it longer lasting are the same.

Ensure a good clean body surface to work with, you will need to remove any dead skin by exfoliation. Fake tan applications that have been done without this vital step are easy to spot as the recipient has light patches in the tan where the dead skin has fallen of.

To complete the preparation, the skin needs to be moist and ready to accept the tan so a good skin moisturizer will need to be applied all over. Always, always, always wear disposable surgical gloves when applying a self tanning cream etc. To avoid any other application mistakes that could give away the fact that the tan is not real, make sure those fingers, feet, elbows and knees are only given the lightest of coats as they have a habit of coming out darker.

Where a spray tanning system has been used it is quite normal, once it has been applied, to use some sort of towel to wipe any excess so streaking does not occur.

Try to stay as still as possible while any self tanning agent dries as it might smear and cause uneven patches. These agents are notoriously good at marking clothing once they have been applied so you are advised to be careful how soon you get ready afterwards and what you intend to wear.

Obviously darker clothing is the best option so the staining will not be as visible, and if possible, something that you will not worry about if it gets damaged. Applying an artificial tan successfully means there are a few rules to follow which should ensure it looks as genuine as possible. - 16492
