Easy Fast Dinner Recipes

By Peter Hallway

People don't have the time to prepare the food Julia Child used to show on her cooking program. It's a different world. Now instead of the fancy French cooking of Julia's day, food TV features easy dinner recipes. That doesn't mean bland. In fact it can be quite exciting to eat these easy to prepare foods.

There is more than television as a source for these dinner cooking ideas. The Internet is full of food. That doesn't mean just the cooking show web sites, although they have a lot of terrific information. There are sites dedicated to simple meals, sites specializing in cheap meals, sites about quick meals, and sites about healthy meals. Every type of meal and food are covered not only by one web site, but by thousands. Someone who decided to read every food related web site online would never finish in a lifetime.

Easy isn't bland. Easy meals don't have to be terrible. Hot dogs are simple, but maybe too mundane. Corn dogs are another story. Lots of people enjoy them and they're not hard to prepare. The batter is just corn meal, flour, sugar and salt with some milk as the liquid. Then fry until golden. Add a popsicle stick to make the experience more like a corn dog at a state fair.

But corn dogs aren't very healthy. Simple foods don't have to be unhealthy foods. Broil a chicken breast, remove the skin, cut it into strips or chunks, toss it into a salad. That was easy. It's also healthy and delicious. Try it with chicken soup. In fact a lot of soups are very healthy, and salads can be made from almost any ingredients. Use leftover ham, diced, some hard boiled eggs, and a pre-mixed salad from the store as a supper.

Now how about little sip of history. Dinner and supper started out as separate meals in colonial times. Physical work required a late afternoon meal, called dinner. The long hard day ended with a larger meal called Supper. Over time dinner and supper became the same meal. However supper and dinner are still separate for some people in 2008, especially for people who perform physical work.

Separating supper from dinner isn't necessary. But try a lighter dinner type meal at supper time, or maybe we can call it dupper. Who cares? Easy dinner recipes can make it fantastic. - 16492
