Christmas Gifts for the Garden and Outdoor Living

By Sue Sherrill

This time year we are told that it's all about giving. However, what I have found it to be is about finding the perfect gift. You can't give the perfect gift unless you find it first and that's not always easy to do. In fact, it's the part that can be down right frustrating.

After fighting the crowds and traffic I finally get to the mall only to discover that the outdoor gifts I am looking to give are not in stock because they are out of season. It's crazy because what I would like to give is not available.

These are the reasons that I find I like doing most of my Christmas shopping on the internet. There are some real advantages when you are shopping for items that are "out of season" or considered seasonal. The internet stores don't have the inventory moving issues that brick and mortar stores have so there is no stock they are trying to move during a specific season.

One of the things about online stores is the variety of products for every price range whether it is for twenty dollars or two thousand dollars. You can find something for everybody even if it is a simple garden trinket or an expensive outdoor treasure.

One of the things I enjoy about shopping over the internet is that I can always go to the fall back position and shop fot those items that every gardener can use. That can be planters, hanging baskets or flower pots. There are some items that you just can't have enough of.

For the more aesthetic gardener, I have to shop a little differently. These guys and gals have a vision for their gardens; a purpose that has to be met and I have to do some thinking before I purchase a gift. Because they are more sentimental, the gifts I give these folks will need to have a definite message.

Since these guys love getting gifts with more than thought behind them I try to find something that will evoke a story or meaning. I look at statutes and lanterns, wall friezes and bird houses. Anything that will bring an emotion whether it be laughter or tears because I know they love this type of gift.

I also love to shop online because I don't like to pack, wrap or ship anything. Buying online and having them ship it is great! Free shipping is fine but even if I have to pay for shipping, I will. Just the fact that someone else is doing it is a deal to me.

This free shipping thing that seems all the rage right now is just not cracked up to be all that it seems. No one can afford to absorb all the shipping costs these days and just pass it on to the consumer in the overall price of the products. I'm not saying it's a scam but I do think there is a bit of smoke and mirror going on. I much prefer a company where I enjoy the selection, the buying process and the service.
