skip lorry drivers have a tough time. They have a huge responsibility to bear when they are driving a skip around on the back of their skip hire van. Skip hire companies have a lot of expense when it comes to running a skip hire company. They have many an overheads to bear, including, petrol, staff, permits, we could be here all day!
With all this in mind, you cannot expect the company to be good at everything, and its this point that brings me to the curious incident of the skip on a railway line.
I was on my way to work, when my ford mustang could not go any further, for ahead of me the road was blocked, not by a fallen tree, but an 8ft skip had fallen off a skip hire lorry, and was lying on its side across the railway lines. The poor skip hire lorry driver was trying to push the skip off the tracks, all by himself.
This guy thought he was on The worlds heaviest man tv show or something. He stood no chance whatsoever of moving that skip. It was funny to see him even try! An 8 yard skip is pretty heavy you know.
I decided to stop my car and help. Not much I could do really, but two grown men, trying to push a skip off the tracks, provoked a few more to stop and help, between eight fully grown men, we were able to push the skip off the tracks and get it back on its bottom, so the skip hire vehicle could get it back on the skip! Fantastic I hear you say.
our celebrations were short lived. During the whole process of pushing the skip, we had managed to damage the lines. There was no way a train could safely pass over the lines now! I could see that a train was due in the next ten minutes, so time was of the essence.
After phone calls to the relevant people, and much convincing that this was not a hoax, we managed to save the lives of hundreds of people. The skip hire lorry driver was deeply apologetic; he had not secured the skip safely enough, and as he had driven over the lines, the bump had caused the skip hire lorry to jolt the skip off, exactly onto the lines.
The line was later fixed. Hey, mistakes happen people, and this was just a mistake. Not everyone can be perfect. Normal service was resumed! - 16492
